  • Vultures; any of 23 species of large carrion-eating birds that live predominantly in the tropics and subtropics. Different species of vultures of firstly classified into two groups, the old world vultures and the new world vultures.
  • The largest species of vulture, the Cinereous Vulture (Aegypius monachus), typically has a wingspan of up to 2.8 m (9 ft.) and weighs up to 8.5 kg (19 lb.).
  • You cannot see a Vultures ear because a fine skin covers the ear to stop blood and other bits getting into it when they are feasting on the carcass of a dead animal.
  • Most vultures have a large pouch in the throat (crop) and can go for long periods without food
  • A particular characteristic of many vultures is a bald head, devoid of normal feathers
  • Although vultures are generally fairly solitary animals, groups of vultures are often seen circling prey from the sky above
  • Several species have a good sense of smell, unusual for the Raptors, and are able to smell dead animals from great heights, up to a mile away. Others find carcasses exclusively by sight.
  • Most have broad food habits, consuming carrion, garbage, and even excrement, but rarely do they descend upon live animals.
