  • Megabats also called fruit bats are found in tropical and subtropical areas of Eurasia, Africa, and Oceania
  • In contrast to the microbats, the fruit bats do not use echolocation, with one exception, the Egyptian fruit bat
  • Fruit bats mostly roost in trees and shrubs
  • They live in colonies that are very large in size
  • Because they eat fruit, some megabat species are unpopular with orchard owners. Often, the fruits are crushed and only their juice is consumed, while the remaining fibrous matter is discarded. The teeth are adapted to bite through hard fruit rinds, and ridges on the soft palate help to squeeze out the juices within.
  • Megabats play a very important role in pollination and seed dispersal of forest species
  • Fruit bats make regular mass migrations, following the seasons for fruit ripening
  • All fruit bats are highly mobile, travelling as much as 48 km (30 mi) in search of food
  • They are most active at night.
  • The very long wings of the Fruit Bat allow them to stay warm during roosting
