  • They can live to be over 50
  • Habitat in the rainforests, woodlands, and grasslands of central Africa
  • Chimpanzees stand approximately 1–1.7 meters (3–5.5 feet) tall
  • They have a coat of brown or black hair
  • Humans and chimps are thought to share a common ancestor who lived some four to eight million years ago. They are our closest living relatives, sharing more than 98 percent of our genetic blueprint
  • The Chimpanzee are highly social and live in loose and flexible groups that can number from  about 20 to well over 100 members
  • They move about on all fours, though able to walk upright
  • Their day is spent both in the trees and on the ground
  • They usually build a nest to sleep in at night
  • Chimpanzees make and use tools. They use sticks to fish termites out of mounds and bunches of leaves to sop up drinking water. They crack hard nuts open by using stones as hammers
  • Their diet consists mostly of fruits, berries and leaves, blossoms, and seeds. Chimpanzees love honey, watermelons, and figs. They also consume insects, eggs, and meat.
  • Chimpanzees are highly intelligent
  • Communication takes place in the form of facial expressions, gestures, and a large array of vocalizations
