  • Zebras are several species of African equids
  • The common plains zebra is about 1.2–1.3 m (47–51 in) at the shoulder
  • Zebras have distinctive black and white striped coats. Their stripes come in different patterns, unique to each individual
  • There are three living species
  • Lives in groups of mares and foals, led by a stallion
  • Zebras communicate with each other with high-pitched barks and whinnying
  • They eat grass and leaves but also twigs, bushes, and herbs if there is little else
  • Its most common predators are lions, leopard, and hyenas
  • Life expectancy is approximately 25 years
  • Its tale is approximately 50cm long (18 inches)
  • When chased, a zebra will zig-zag from side to side, making it more difficult for the predator to attack. When cornered, the zebra will rear up and kick or bite its attacker.
  • Prefer to sleep standing
  • Its black stripes are believed to have a heat repellent effect, keep insects away, and be confusing to predators
  • One of the most extraordinary phenomena in the natural world is the annual 1,800-mile migration of millions of zebra between the Serengeti in Tanzania and Kenya’s Masai Mara in search of food and water.
